Since joining the global graduate programme in HSBC Securities Services, I have been given numerous challenges. However, my biggest challenge and also opportunity was moving to Hong Kong for my six-month international rotation, which is part of the HSBC Securities Services global graduate programme.
I went to Hong Kong knowing no one and met people both inside and outside of work. I learned about our Asia network through the sub-custodian network my team manages. We manage queries from over 17 markets in Asia. The aim is to provide a consistent service to clients across all our markets. It keeps you on your toes as each market has its own regulations and processes.
You really see HSBC’s values in action when you move to an office knowing no one. I have been taken out for coffee, lunch and dinner by colleagues. Everyone was generous with their time and gave me both work and personal advice. I now know a number of people on my floor and can easily approach anyone with a question about work – or lunch.
There are over 10 different nationalities on my floor alone. Some people have been here for over 20 years. I love all that about HSBC – the internationalism and the fact that you can have a long career at the bank if you are willing to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities on offer.
