Our application process
At HSBC, we want every candidate to be set up for success and feel confident. We recognise that everyone brings unique skills, experiences, and perspectives, and we value the individuality each person offers.
Throughout the recruitment journey, we use a range of assessment methods, including online questionnaires and virtual and in-person interviews to better understand your strengths and ‘superpowers’.
Here are 6 possible key steps in the process, however every experience can vary.

Application guidance
We want you to perform at your best, so if you’re neurodiverse, or have a disability or long-term health condition that may affect your ability to show us your full potential at any stage in the process, please let us know when you apply. If you have queries before or after you’ve applied, contact your local recruitment team (opens in new window).
Begin your CV with a summary of your skills, accomplishments and career goals.
Follow this with your employment history and work experience, starting with your most recent role. Include full details of your employers, dates of employment, job titles and responsibilities.
Give examples of your skills and achievements, relating these to the role for which you’re applying where possible.
Next, give details of the university, college or school you attended, your qualifications and grades and any work-related courses taken. Start with the most recent and work backwards, using bullet points or a table.
Make sure to mention any hobbies or interests that have a particular relevance to the role for which you are applying.
Finally, ensure your contact details are up to date and that the CV is no more than two pages long.
Our online assessments are designed to identify whether you have the skills required for the role, and to assess your suitability for working at HSBC.
The number and type of assessments will depend on the role you’re applying for.
You can take the assessments at any time within a fixed number of days, as specified in the email.
You should complete some of the supplied practice questions before you begin and start the assessments only when you’re sure you can give them your undivided attention.
On demand video interviews allow you to answer interview questions via video, without an interviewer, either on the phone or face to face, listening to your responses live.
It allows you to conduct the interview at a time that suits you.
We may conduct an interview via live video, telephone or in-person, which could last approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the role.
Regardless of the method of interview, we’ll ask you about specific occasions when you’ve demonstrated a particular ability. It’s important that you identify your strengths and be prepared to give examples of when you’ve demonstrated relevant skills.
These examples don’t have to be taken from work. For each example, explain the situation you faced, the specific task required, the actions that you took, and how those actions affected any outcomes.
Authenticity, integrity, and transparency are central to how we hire at HSBC. We make decisions based on your individual skills, experiences, and potential.
We also embrace innovation and new technologies and recognise that candidates may use GenAI tools to support their job applications. However, any use of technology that misrepresents your true abilities could impact the outcome of your application.
To ensure a fair and authentic recruitment process, please follow the guidelines below when using GenAI.
You may use GenAI tools to:
- Research information about HSBC, our values, and the roles we offer.
- Help structure your CV or application, provided the content accurately reflects your own experience and skills.
- Prepare for interviews by practising answers to common questions or gathering general advice.
- Assist with organising your thoughts or drafting ideas, ensuring the final submission is genuinely your own.
You must not use GenAI tools to:
- Fabricate or exaggerate skills, qualifications, or work experience.
- Generate responses during live or recorded interviews.
- Misrepresent your motivations, capabilities, or achievements.
- Submit work that you cannot personally explain, validate, or replicate if asked during the recruitment process.

What advice would you give your younger self when applying for a job?
[Danyelle]
Apply for the job.
There’s so many times I didn’t because I didn’t think I had all the experience.

But the likelihood of it is as long as you have 60%, apply for the job.
What’s the worst that can happen?
[Hannah]
I would say make sure you’re focusing on jobs in areas where you’re passionate about,

because you’re then able to bring your whole self to your work and it really helps when, you know, you’re building ambition and drive within your area of focus and you enjoy it more.

What skills matter most in this new AI world?
[Kate]
Critical thinking is key.

AI is great in terms of giving us quick responses and driving efficiencies in our process, but you need to be able to interpret that data, use it responsibly and really provide that human touch as part of it.
[Zoe]
Adaptability, keeping in advancement of AI, is absolutely critical.

But for me, it’s that human connection.
So, if you can demonstrate empathy, curiosity, collaboration, it’s being that human interface between the two worlds,
I think it’s absolutely imperative.

How can a candidate show confidence?

How can a candidate show confidence?
[Adam]
I think a candidate shows confidence through clarity.

[Adam]
So, clarity around what you’re good at, and clarity around the value that you’re going to bring to the role, and clarity around why you want the role.
[Kate]
Being clear around your career and talking confidently about what you’ve achieved within your role but equally talking about your learnings in situations that perhaps haven’t gone to plan.
I think that really shows an element of self-awareness and the ability and drive to really want to grow and deliver in your role.

What did you worry about when you were first starting off that didn’t matter later?

What did you worry about when you were first starting off that didn’t matter later?
[Rachel]
I guess my biggest worry was that everybody knew everything, and I didn’t,

but soon came to realise that everyone just know different things, bring different skills to the table, and I did as well.
[Danyelle]
I really put a lot of pressure on myself when I was younger.
I thought everybody had it figured out.
What I realised now, they don’t.
And it’s absolutely okay to get things wrong.
Be curious and learn along the way is my advice.
