Nurturing ambitions

Everything starts with an idea.
An idea that exists simply because it’s imagined.
An idea that grows because it’s nurtured.
And thrives because it’s uniquely connected to the world.
An idea that educates, feeds, cares, thrills and creates valuable opportunities.
An idea that puts trust in those who’ve nurtured ideas before and provides for future generations.
An idea that contributes towards global progress.
And enriches the lives of those it touches.

HSBC has been almost an extension of us.
They’re almost like my wife.

I like to push and I like to set ambitious targets.
About one year ago I started training for the 200 metre sprint.
When I run, it’s not about finishing.
It’s about the joy you get when you run.
As a kid, I used to do a lot of math.
And the more complex it gets, it’s more challenging.
And I just like challenge.
I’m Dan Vahdat, the founder and CEO of Huma.

Huma partners with governments, health systems and life sciences companies through technology platforms to deliver more connected, proactive, predictive care to patients.
At the beginning, my relationship with HSBC was more on the business side but as time evolved it became an extension of family whether it’s to book restaurants in the middle of nowhere to anything else finance related.
That’s a gift to have.
As we evolved we pivoted, we changed.
It’s harder to innovate within one field.
So, combining computing and medicine, for me, was really exciting.
That kicked us to go to the next level.
Suddenly there’s an opportunity for a company like us to accelerate its growth by acquiring other companies that maybe two years ago, either we couldn’t buy, or it would have been very expensive to buy.
HSBC accelerated our movement.

By having HSBC dealing with anything personal related it helps with the anxiety and the stress, which is a really important thing and sometimes people don’t talk enough about it.
Also, it helps you to focus on the right stuff.
With HSBC it’s always been about building the long-term mission.
You need those kind of partners in your life.

In 2011, my uncle called me to his office.
I sat with my uncle and my aunt, and they asked me to join the business.
And quite frankly, I didn’t hesitate.
I grabbed that opportunity.

Mrs Purviz R Shroff
Permanent Managing Director
Ruttonjee Estates Continuation Limited
[Noshir]
The association with HSBC really started almost from the beginning.
Hormusjee came to Hong Kong in 1884, and in 1887, he set up his grocery business, and he needed capital, and HSBC were there to provide that.
When his son, Jehangir, finished school, he joined his father.
The family was very much into wines and spirits, and Jehangir needed finance for that.
So, it was a close association with HSBC.
After the war, they decided that they would concentrate on the property.
In 1954, Jehangir set up the first family trust with HSBC trustees.
The idea was to keep the shares in the trust in the family so that it would be for future generations.
A lot of the credit actually goes to HSBC trustees because they advised the family that they had these two six-storey, seven-storey buildings, and that they could capitalise on the income by moving into redeveloping.
So that’s what they did in 1983.
And my Uncle Rusy had done philanthropy for decades, but he realized that it wasn’t targeted.
So, in 2017, the trustees also approached him, and said, "Why don’t we target this more?"
So, at that time, the Rusy and Purviz Shroff Charitable Foundation was created thanks to the HSBC trustees.
The charity that my aunt has dearest at heart is Mother’s Choice.
She was a volunteer there for 20, 30 years.
She used to go every morning.
So, it’s not only about giving money,
it’s also about...
[Purviz]
Giving love, giving of your time, and loving and sharing with the little babies.
They’re so sweet there. They’re all my pumpkins.
[Noshir]
With the Parsees’ and our Zoroastrian faith, we do believe that when you have enough, you have to really look to the community.
And I think that has gone through all stages with all the individuals in the Ruttonjee family, and hopefully for future generations.

It’s a very symbolic statement I think from us, showing one, our expansion into the Greater Bay Area, and two, the diversification of our business model across southern China.
HSBC Life is the pre-eminent insurer across Hong Kong, and we are growing very, very fast in Macau.
HSBC Life China operates across six other cities in the Greater Bay, and we want to be a leading wealth manager across Asia,
Asia is where wealth accumulation is happening faster than anywhere else in the world.
[Wayne]
The opening of this new centre is going to have a significant impact.

Then when I retire, I don’t need to rely on others and can live off my savings.
The HSBC representative is really friendly.
They ask the clients what they need, to understand their personal financial and family situation.

HSBC is committed to developing the business here in Macau.
As an employee I feel a sense of belonging, and want to grow together with the company.
[Edward]
All economic and demographic trajectories show that this will shortly be the single largest super-economic zone in the world, and as we see more and more freedom of movement across the Greater Bay, as we see more and more mainland Chinese visitors coming to Macau, it’s important for us to be there, at their convenience, serving them here in Macau.

Building a brighter future: Arvind’s story
Duration: 00:02:52

For me, the most important thing is family - how I can ensure my family is financially secure for anything in the future.
Creating an environment for my son to be successful in what he decides to do in the future as well.

Building A Brighter Future
Arvind’s Story
[Arvind]
I am currently based here in Singapore.
I live with my wife and son.
My dad used to take care of all the finances for my dad and mum.
[Arvind and wife - on a video call]
Hello. How are you?
Only my mum is alive, and she’s living all by herself in Mumbai.
[Arvind - on a video call]
You should also call Akshay sometime...
[Arvind]
But after I lost my dad, my mum was relying on me financially for all the advice on what she could do with the finances she had.
HSBC I feel, is part of my family.
In fact, they played a key role in bringing discipline in how I take care of my finances.
HSBC was helping me guide on what I could do for my mum.
And they do it not just for me.
You know, my whole family banks with HSBC.
My relationship managers, they know my wife, they know my son.
So anything which needs finances, I lean on to my relationship managers at HSBC, and they holistically help us in managing that portfolio.
In my current role, it needs me to travel 70% to 80% of my time to go and meet with customers, predominantly in Asia-Pacific as the region.
Having lived in multiple markets and countries, Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, now in Singapore, HSBC has made banking across geographies and region very seamless.
[Arvind - on a video call]
Should I look at investing that sum in something else?
[Arvind]
In the last 26 years, I’ve been working with three to four differnt portfolio managers from the bank, and they have helped me guide on the relevance and importance of financial security.
That has helped me bring some discipline in my life.
Otherwise, I used to spend everything I used to earn on a monthly basis and, used to live paycheck to paycheck on a month-on-month basis.
It helps with more freedom to plan for what I can do, things I can indulge in as a family together today, without worrying too much on am I eating into what I need to do in retirement and post-retirement life.
So, that helps me in planning for my kid’s education in the future, and for my family’s well-being.
I didn’t inherit any wealth from my parents and family.
So, we come from a middle-class background.
My personal ambition is to leave the world as a better place from where I am today, you know, do my own bit for the world economy and also for my family.
