I joined HSBC over 10 years ago after working as a mortgage adviser at another bank. I wanted something different – a role that was more personal, where I could really get to know my clients and be part of their financial journey over the long term. HSBC stood out. It had the reputation, the stability and the structure to build a proper career.

A Wealth Manager

Today, I give advice to around 500 clients across Gloucestershire, who have available funds between £100,000 to £750,000. Many have inherited money, never had a pension, or simply don’t know what to do with their savings. A number of my clients are self-employed, which often means they’ve missed out on traditional workplace pensions or need more flexible financial planning options. I help them understand how to make their money work harder.

I’m supported by a network of tax specialists, pension technical specialists, protection experts and product teams. We work together to deliver a joined-up service. Being able to give advice across multiple areas is really rewarding.

One client had a lump sum sitting in a current account due to an inheritance. Working with our technical team, we helped her set up a pension, enabling her to maximise and reclaim tax relief, including reinstating her personal allowance and boosting the value of her pension by thousands. This gave her the flexibility to retire comfortably. We were also able to protect her income so she could continue to make pension contributions if she had a change of circumstances and invest the remainder of her funds using other tax efficient wrappers.

A role that grows with you

There’s constant development in this role. I receive regular training to stay ahead of changes in regulation, products and client needs. I also have the backing of an experienced team. Even if I’m often the only Wealth Manager in the branch, it’s collaborative behind the scenes and that makes all the difference.

For me, it’s about being part of something bigger. HSBC’s global footprint means we can support clients with international needs just as confidently as local ones. There are clear career paths here if you want to progress – whether that’s into more technical roles, leadership, or specialist advice. I feel proud of the work we do – and I feel that I’m in the right place to keep doing it.

I stay because of the clients, many of whom are self-made people with fresh perspectives and bold ideas. I learn as much from them as they do from me. And I stay because HSBC surrounds me with the support and structure to grow, just as I do for my clients.
