I had an international upbringing and education so the global reach of HSBC was naturally appealing. After joining the organisation in London, I worked in Europe, Asia and now in the Americas. The company and industry has changed a lot in my 10 years here, and this has presented many challenges and opportunities. It has helped ensure that I have continued to learn, which has always been important for me.
I currently manage a trading desk in New York for the Global Markets business in the Americas. My responsibilities include managing the credit, funding and liquidity risks for our trading books in the US, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. Recently, we have become increasingly involved in managing the capital requirements of the business as global regulations change following the crisis in 2008. As a result of this broad remit, there is seldom a quiet moment.
Our day starts early, and finishes when the work is done. Although there is some necessary routine involved in managing a trading desk, much of the time we are involved in live deals, leaving little time for other initiatives. It is not unusual for a day to involve a briefing for senior management in Brazil, a client meeting in New York and discussions with our support teams in finance and risk. We are fortunate to work with some very smart people who help make each day as rewarding as it is challenging.
