Footprint management
In 2008, HSBC set new, four-year reduction targets for its energy and water use and waste and CO2 emissions. By 2011, HSBC aims to decrease its energy use by 8%, water use by 11%, waste by 10%, and CO2 emissions by 6%.
We arrive at these figures by consolidating individual targets from 23 countries, our Global Technology Centres and Group Service Centres. The combined country targets cover 95% of the Group by full time employees. Our targets take into account business growth as well as the savings the Group should achieve through planned environmental initiatives. We report on the business' progress annually in the HSBC Holdings plc Sustainability Report.
Performance
In 2007, HSBC launched the Global Environmental Efficiency Programme, a US$90 million initiative to trial environmental innovation and showcase best practice across its more than 9,500 buildings globally.
We have an international network of employees with a particular responsibility for managing environmental targets, and in 2008 we introduced environmental criteria into personal performance objectives for the Group Management Board and regional heads.
