The Group has been operating in Panama since opening a representative office in 1972.  Approval to operate as a general licensed banking institution in Panama City was granted in 1973 and in the Colon Free Zone in 1983.

In 2000, the Group acquired the banking operations of Chase Manhattan Bank in Panama.  In 2005, HSBC acquired the group of companies trading under the brand name Financomer, which entered the personal lending market in Panama in 1986.  To complement the existing operation in Panama, HSBC completed in November 2006 the acquisition of Grupo Banistmo, Central America’s leading financial services organisation by assets. Banistmo was a full-service banking and insurance group with operations in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Colombia.

HSBC Panama has 20 branches and more than 180 ATMS, providing a comprehensive range of financial services through four customer groups:  Personal Financial Services (including consumer finance); Commercial Banking; Global Banking and Markets; and Private Banking.
