Diversity is a fundamental part of how HSBC operates as a business
HSBC has been named Company of the Year at the European Diversity Awards, in recognition of its efforts to build a more diverse and inclusive bank.
The bank beat seven other shortlisted companies to the title, which was presented at a ceremony in London on 16 November. The awards recognise individuals and organisations who have made an outstanding contribution across areas of diversity including age, disability, faith, gender, race and sexual orientation.

Actions demonstrating the bank’s commitment to diversity and inclusion across the organisation include:
Launching gender neutral titles in the UK to coincide with the International Transgender Day of Visibility
Developments in ATM technologies and mobile app design to help make them more accessible for people with a visual impairment
Having replicas of HSBC’s iconic lions, Stephen and Stitt, painted in rainbow colours by a local LGBT+ artist and placed outside the entrance of the bank’s Hong Kong headquarters for Pride celebrations in 2016
Testing a ‘Managing your Money with Dementia’ guide for customers in UK branches
HSBC was also nominated for Outstanding Employee Network for its Pride UK employee resource group, while the network’s Trans Lead, Stuart Barette, was shortlisted for Role Model of the Year.

The win came in the same week that Andy Maguire, Group Chief Operating Officer, HSBC, spoke about the importance of different employee networks working together to achieve common goals and make the workplace more inclusive.
Speaking at EurOUT, a conference for LGBT+ aspiring business leaders, Mr Maguire said that employee networks at HSBC had played a key role in championing opportunities such as flexible working.
He added that networks “have so much more energy than the average of the population in an organisation, so [by joining forces on common agenda items] you can get a lot done. That’s a great way of moving the needle on practical issues that people want to get solved.”
The EurOUT event was aimed at graduate students and alumni from leading business schools.
HSBC was recognised as one of Stonewall’s Top Global Employers for 2017 and received its Global Trans Inclusion Award 2017.
