The donation to the Red Cross will support the charity’s relief work
HSBC has donated USD250,000 to the British Red Cross and USD250,000 to SOS Children’s Villages to help relief efforts in Nepal, which was hit by a major earthquake on Saturday, 25 April.
“This was a very powerful earthquake and its impact has been devastating,” said Alexander Matheou, the Director of Programmes for the British Red Cross. “People are sleeping out in the open, too scared to return home. Some have no home to return to. We are extremely worried about these communities.”
The donation to the Red Cross will support the charity’s relief work and the contribution to SOS Children’s Villages will be used to help children find their families. The money will also fund longer-term care for children left orphaned by the disaster.
For UK employees and customers who wish to contribute, HSBC will begin taking donations at branches from Thursday, 30 April and through its cash machines from Saturday, 2 May. In Canada, branches began accepting donations on 28 April. HSBC offices in other countries are planning similar initiatives.
The Disaster Emergency Committee, an umbrella organisation of 13 charities, has declared the earthquake in Nepal a national disaster. Donations can be made through its website.
