I am on a steep learning curve on the Graduate Analyst Programme, which has allowed me to develop skills within business analysis, systems analysis, development, operating systems and project management. To date, my placements have been in Global Data Services and, now, Foreign Exchange IT.
I work as part of a truly global team. Every morning I speak to colleagues in Hong Kong and China to catch up on what has happened overnight, and in the afternoon, I hand over to New York and Brazil. I thought investment banking would be a lot more ruthless and competitive, but my team is the most friendly social team I have worked with. They are extremely calm under pressure and take a measured approach to all issues. I am extremely proud of being part of this team because we are constantly working to improve the Foreign Exchange Technology systems.
I have been surprised by the flexible working hours in both placements. I can usually work from home at least one day a week. Although some days I can end up working longer than a regular 9 am-5 pm shift, but I really enjoy what I am doing.
As a female in banking and technology, I feel like I can often be outnumbered. But at HSBC, I can be myself, and I really feel like a core member of the team. I am passionate about technology and would recommend that more women join this department at HSBC. The industry is constantly evolving and adapting so exciting opportunities are always coming up.
