I couldn’t have had a better start to my career. I joined the General Banker Programme, which offers a mix of classroom training, on-the-job coaching and placements in different business areas. It set me up for the international experiences I’ve had at HSBC.
I currently work in Shanghai on renminbi (or RMB) internationalisation products. Our main challenge is to update our colleagues all over the world on the latest RMB developments as well as the new products and services we offer, so that together we provide the best solutions to our clients globally. I’ve also worked in other Chinese locations (Beijing, Tianjin and Shenzhen) and in Singapore on short-term assignments, and in Guangzhou and London on longer-term secondments. Working in different cities with different cultures is exciting and inspiring. It’s fascinating talking to people from different backgrounds and moving people around means we can exchange ideas easily.
I’m really pleased with the way my career at HSBC has unfolded. As well as working in different locations, I have experienced many business areas and support functions before moving into my specialist area. The culture at HSBC is open, transparent and all-inclusive. Individuality is recognised and encouraged. People of all levels sit together and it is great to work with people who you can learn from.
HSBC also provides flexibility at work which I think is very important. My phone and laptop connect me to HSBC, and with flexible working hours, it means I do not always have to be at my desk. I’ve also had team members, male and female, who have managed to arrange hours to fit in with childcare arrangements.
I look forward to passing on knowledge about China, its culture and economy to my colleagues across the world.
