I joined HSBC Canada’s Executive Management Programme because it is globally recognised and combines three of my interests: international banking, strategy and leadership. It also stood out from other programmes for offering fantastic, international career development, networking and mentorship opportunities. Over the course of the programme, I have had the opportunity to take placements in Commercial Banking, Credit Risk and now Global Banking and Markets.
So far, the mix of placements in Vancouver and Toronto, formal training and on-the-job learning throughout has enhanced my personal and professional development and allowed me to establish a global network of colleagues. People genuinely support my ambitions, and any time I have expressed an interest in pursuing an opportunity, my mentor and managers are happy to provide advice, share experiences and recommend placements.
I strongly believe in giving back to the community and am proud HSBC has so many sustainability initiatives. I have helped raise money for BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, volunteered for ‘Meals on Wheels’ and planted trees for ‘Trees Across Toronto’. Not only is HSBC’s participation in these initiatives great for the brand, it also supports our reputation for leading positive change.
Although I started my career with little practical knowledge about banking in the real world (I have a double major in industrial design and finance), this programme has accelerated my understanding and experience. I am excited about the possibility of an opportunity to gain international experience later in my career.
