Part of the appeal of HSBC is its international connections and the opportunities available – even early on in your career. I joined as part of the Specialised Graduate Programme for HSBC Technology and Services. It gave me the chance to work on a number of projects in different areas of the bank, including Planning and Finance, Fraud Prevention and Global Banking and Markets IT. After working on key cost reduction and infrastructure projects within Global Banking and Markets, I moved to my present role in Business Risk and Control Management.
I majored in International Business at university, so the technological side of things was quite new. In some respects, a non-technical background offers an opportunity to see things differently. I was keen to get to grips with the terminology, and people were always happy to help. The technical understanding I gained early in my career has served me well. HSBC has given me so many different opportunities to grow, both personally and professionally. I have gained a lot of experience, picked up a lot of technical knowledge and met new people who have become firm friends.
I am part of the Americas team, which is based in New York. My role means I have contact with colleagues all over the world, which has helped me to understand HSBC’s global objectives. I have also developed a global peer support network that includes the USA and the UK. Moving forward, I would like to spend time in our regional locations.
