HSBC aims to be the world’s leading international bank. High-potential, high-performing and internationally mobile managers are important to the successful achievement of this strategy.

The International Manager (IM) Programme offers a diverse career, providing the opportunity to work in varied roles and geographies. IMs have played a part in the success of HSBC since its founding member, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was set up in 1865 to finance trade between China and Europe. With more than 400 IMs deployed across 56 countries, the programme provides us with the flexibility to move our IMs around the world to support business demands across the Group. Ongoing global mobility remains a fundamental requirement for all IMs. The programme also helps to prepare talented individuals for succession to senior Group positions.

IMs are formally aligned to a Global Business, Global Function or HSBC Technology and Services. This allows the IM to build a portfolio of banking and leadership skills that creates depth of knowledge and experience within a business specialisation. IMs gain exposure to both emerging and developed markets.

Junior Executive IMs can expect to be assigned to a new role approximately every two years. The roles can vary significantly, but IMs can expect to be challenged at all times. The scope and duration of roles will increase, with assignments lasting three to five years, as an IM becomes more senior.

Assignments can be in any location in which HSBC operates and may require a new language to be learned. Personal development occurs through on-the-job learning and formal training.

IMs require a specific set of qualities to cope with and build upon the challenges they face. They are excited by the prospect of constant change that comes with working across geographies and in a variety of roles. They are adaptable and flexible.

How are IMs recruited?

The IM Programme is an opportunity available to existing HSBC employees. We do not currently recruit International Managers externally. We expect a lot from our IMs. They must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Evidence of high performance and high potential relative to peers
  • Clear leadership potential and the development of technical expertise
  • Commitment to HSBC's values and business principles
  • Agility, able to make an immediate impact and deliver in new and changing situations. Ability to operate in ambiguous and complex situations
  • Significant achievements within the Group and outside the workplace
  • A full understanding of the IM proposition, lifestyle and level of personal commitment required
  • A commitment to ongoing global mobility while on the programme
  • An aptitude to learn languages
