Young Entrepreneurs, Sri Lanka

Future First is HSBC's flagship global education programme for disadvantaged children. Our objective is to invest in the future of street children, orphans and children in care. We aim to deliver a lasting impact on these children's lives by providing them with access to education and life skills training, enabling them to become active and productive within mainstream society.

HSBC is working with Young Entrepreneurs Sri Lanka (YESL) and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education to provide entrepreneurship education to 1000 street children. The programme will help prepare young people for the world of work by teaching them about profit and managing money effectively, how to create jobs in their communities, and how to be entrepreneurial in the workplace. The programme covers the basics of an economic system, the rules of supply and demand and the steps involved in setting up a business.

The programme is taught at three levels: elementary, middle school and high school. The elementary stage has been completed and we have now launched the next level, which will show children the value of entrepreneurship and introduce business thinking and financial literacy.

In addition to the main programme, HSBC staff volunteers visit the participating schools every month to take part in the activities and share their experience with the children. HSBC employees get involved with 'outward bound' training programmes designed to develop leadership skills. They help organise talent shows to help students build confidence, self esteem and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their talent.
