City of Youth, Brazil

Casa dos Menores (City of Youth) is located in Campinas, 96km from São Paulo in Brazil. Campinas - like many other Brazilian cities - has a high number of children living on its streets as a result of being abandoned, orphaned, or having run away from abusive parents or guardians. Studies show that the life expectancy of street children in Brazil is between two and five years from the time they become homeless. Even those children who do survive struggle to find productive work. Instead, many become involved in criminal activities, living in constant fear.

City of Youth brings these children in off the street and provides them with all the benefits of a loving home until they are 18 years old, and are in a position to become employed and enter society as productive citizens. The centre provides boys and girls aged 8 - 18 with education and training programmes in marketable job skills, followed by an intensive social integration programme, internships, job placements in their chosen area of training and transition housing.

The centre continues to provide mentoring into early adulthood, preparing the students for productive futures and giving them the tools to flourish in their professions, families and communities.

Thanks to HSBC's Future First funding, City of Youth has been able to transform the lives of hundreds of children and teenagers. Since October 2008, 225 resident students have been cared for at the centre and 38 of them have successfully moved into independent living. In addition, vocational training and job placements have been provided to 350 disadvantaged children living in the surrounding communities.

Within two years of leaving the programme, 75% of graduates are employed in stable jobs and have permanent homes.
