Yesterday, 9 July, Brittany Lincicome of the United States overcame a first class field to win the 2006 HSBC Women's World Match Play Championships at the Hamilton Farm Golf Course in New Jersey.
39th seed Lincicome beat World No. 2 Michelle Wie en route to the final, where she triumphed over Juli Inkster 3&2. The 20-year old celebrated her first tour success by picking up a winner's cheque for US$500,000.
"I'm so in shock," she said after her opponent Inkster conceded defeat on the 16th hole. "It's a huge accomplishment. It's what I've been trying to do since I was a little girl.
"Tomorrow I think it will actually sink in that I won a tournament.
"Thank God I was up by a lot, because I've never dealt with this pressure situation and I was failing a bit to close out the match which I have done almost every day this week."
HSBC is one of the world's largest corporate golfing sponsors, and supports a range of amateur, professional, youth and grassroots tournaments around the world. The HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship has become one of the most prestigious events on the golfing calendar since its inception last year.
In September, some of the biggest names in the men's game will compete in the HSBC World Match Play Championships at Wentworth in the UK, while the second HSBC Champions tournament - the biggest golfing event in Asia - tees off in November in China.
