HSBC Group Investment Businesses - specifically HSBC Investments, Halbis Partners, Sinopia, and HSBC Specialist Investments - have signed the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI). Launched in April 2006 by UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, the Principles provide a framework that helps investors to incorporate environmental, social and corporate governance issues into their investment activities. In signing the Principles, HSBC commits to a number of areas including investment analysis and decision making, active ownership, transparency, collaboration and wider promotion of the Principles.
Alain Dromer, Head of HSBC Group Investment Businesses, said: "Adopting the UN Principles reinforces the commitment HSBC has made to sustainable development and contributes to our goal of incorporating sustainability further into our core operations, both from a risk and business development perspective."
Paul Clements-Hunt, Head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said: "HSBC's adoption of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment demonstrates that it continues to embed sustainability into its operations, and builds upon its position as the FT 'Sustainable Bank of the Year'."
HSBC is one of the founding signatories of the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), a global partnership between UNEP and the financial sector working to understand the impacts of environmental and social considerations on financial performance. Its support for UNEP FI goes beyond membership, and it actively participates in both the Asset Management and Climate Change Working Groups.
HSBC is a member of the DJSI World Index, which selects the top 10 per cent 'sustainability leaders' among the world's 2,500 largest companies. It has also been a member of the ethical index FTSE4Good since its inception.
