HSBC requests proposals for carbon offsets

08 August 2005

HSBC has sent a Request for Proposal (RFP) to a number of potential suppliers of carbon offsets, which will help it to develop the systems and processes required to become a carbon neutral organisation. It aims to test the systems in the three months between October and the end of December 2005.

HSBC committed in December 2004 to become the world’s first carbon neutral major bank and since then has developed policies and practices to reduce its contribution to global climate change. In the words of Sir John Bond, HSBC Group Chairman, climate change “represents the largest single environmental challenge this century.”

In response, a Carbon Management Plan implemented by HSBC commits it to reduce energy consumption, buy renewable electricity (where possible) and to offset the remaining CO2 emissions, in order to become a carbon neutral company by 2006.  The bank has introduced a system of measuring, managing and reporting direct emissions including electricity, natural gas, fuel oil and business travel, and in July 2005, it set reduction targets for the period 2005-2007 for energy use (seven per cent) and carbon dioxide (five per cent).

The RPF launched today will help HSBC to build a portfolio of carbon offsets required for it to meet its carbon neutral commitment. It is available until 16 August 2005. Download the Word and PDF files from the downloads box on the top right hand corner of the page.
