Senior appointment at HSBC in Hong Kong

HSBC Holdings plc announced today that the Chief Executive Officer of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Aman Mehta, 57, will retire at the end of December this year after 35 years with the Group. He took up his current appointment in January 1999.

Michael SmithAman Mehta will be succeeded by Michael Smith, 46, who is currently based in the UK as Group General Manager with responsibility to review and restructure the Group Head Office. From 1995-1997, he was Executive Director and Deputy Chief Executive of Hongkong Bank Malaysia Berhad. In 1997, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Argentina Holdings SA, with responsibility for the Group’s operations in Argentina. He was appointed Chairman there and, in the same year, was appointed a Group General Manager. He has also served in the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East.

Before taking up the position of Chief Executive Officer, Michael Smith will stand in as General Manager, Hong Kong, for two months from September while General Manager, Raymond Or, attends an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard University in the United States.
