Frequently asked questions

- How many IM are you recruiting this year?
We are looking for approximately 25 IMs globally to join us in 2012 across our various entry levels.
- How many IMs will you recruit from my country / university / level of experience?
We do not have specific targets by nationality, university, seniority or anything else. We will look for the best 50 individuals globally to join us as IMs.
- Where do you recruit from?
We look for IMs from around the world and aim to recruit a group of nationalities that supports HSBC's global presence. We run an on-campus campaign at the undergraduate and MBA level, and also accept applications from experienced professionals working either within HSBC or externally.
- How do I apply to be an IM?
You need to submit an online application form via this website. Please read our 'Application hints and tips' section before applying.
- How do I know which entry level to apply to?
When you submit your application, we will look at your level of qualifications and work experience, and process your application accordingly.
- What is the application deadline?
We will accept applications for 2012 until 1st February 2012. However, we do not wait for the deadline to start recruiting, so it is always best to submit your application as soon as possible.
- How many applications do you receive?
We anticipate that we will receive approximately 6,000 applications this year.
- How long will the assessment process take?
This will depend on when you submit your application, and the availability of selection centres in your location. On average, the recruitment process takes around three months.
- I do not have a background in finance. Does this matter?
No. We look at each application based on its own merits. You must, however, be able to demonstrate a commitment to global mobility and motivation towards a generalist banking career. If you have previous experience, you must also be able to demonstrate leadership and a background that will lend itself to International Management.
- What are the available start dates for 2012?
We have start dates available throughout the year, and will confirm the availability when we make offers.
- If I receive an offer, can I defer joining until next year?
We are currently recruiting only for entry during 2012.
- Can I choose which part of the business or which country to work in?
No. International Management assignments are arranged according to business needs. If you apply to be an IM, it is essential that you understand that you will be developing a generalist career, and you must have the flexibility to work in any of the countries and territories in which we operate, in any part of our business.
- When will I find out where my first posting is?
If you are attending our residential induction programme (new graduates only), you will usually find out where you will be working on your first day with HSBC. If you are joining us at a more senior level, we will let you know as soon as we have a posting arranged for you.
- What if I am posted to a country that I do not want to go to?
When you become an IM, you do so on the understanding that you could be assigned to work in any of the countries and territories in which HSBC operates. We need IMs to be extremely flexible and able to cope outside of their comfort zone. The lifestyle is not for everyone, and you should think carefully about it before applying.
- How will my career progress as an IM?
We expect IMs to be high performers from day one and throughout their career. While progression is based on individual performance, many of our IMs reach the most senior positions in the organisation.
- Can I reapply to be an IM if I have been unsuccessful in the past?
You can reapply, but you should think carefully about the reasons why your application was unsuccessful last time and what you have done subsequently to improve.
- What happens if I become an IM but am no longer able to commit to global mobility?
You would need to stop being an IM. However, this does not necessarily mean the end of your career with HSBC - you could apply for a role within the Group in which you can be permanently based in a particular location.
