Application tips
Your CV (or resume) is an important part of your application. It will often be our first contact with you, and a good CV will make a strong impression. So before you start our online application process, make sure that your CV looks and sounds as good as possible. Here are some tips:
- Think about what the recruiter will want to read. They handle a lot of CVs, so make it easy for them to find the information they need.
- Include a short paragraph that includes your skills and abilities.
- List your employment history, starting with your most recent job.
- Highlight your key responsibilities and achievements.
- Do not write too much. Keep your CV concise.
- As an equal opportunities employer, we will assess your application on your skills and experiences. We do not need to know your date of birth, gender, marital status or nationality.
- Use a clear, professional font.
- Use bullet points where possible, as they are easier to read.
- Check your CV for mistakes, and then ask a friend to check it too.
Assessment and interviews
Our approach to assessment is based on our values, so you can expect a process that is consistent, fair and relevant to your role. We use a variety of methods to assess your skills and experience. These will vary from role to role, but will include at least one of the following:
- Application - Whether you send in a CV or fill in an application form, we will want to know your education and work history.
- Online testing - For some roles, we may ask you to complete online tests. These tests are designed to help us understand whether you have the skills needed to succeed in the role. You will be able to practice some questions first.
- Telephone interview - Following an application or an online test, you may be invited to have a telephone interview. This will be arranged at a convenient time for you, and you will be asked to talk about examples of times when you have demonstrated key capabilities.
- Assessment centre - This is usually a day or half-day of tasks and interviews that will help us see how you perform in work-related situations. It is also an opportunity for you to get to know us better.
- Face-to-face interview - This stage involves meeting with an interviewer from HSBC who will want to understand more about you and your fit for the role. You will be encouraged to ask questions of your own, about the role and working for HSBC.
