Sponsorship
At HSBC we view sponsorship both as an investment to help sustain and grow our business and as an opportunity to connect with customers and colleagues in the local communities in which we serve.
At HSBC we know first-hand how important it is to understand and learn from different countries and people around the world, which is why the delivery of our sponsorships has a special focus on developing youth, furthering education and embracing different cultures.

Sports sponsorships
HSBC is a major sponsor of sport around the world - with a broad portfolio of sponsorships focusing on Rugby, Tennis, Golf and Eventing. HSBC's proud tradition of sponsoring sport dates back to 1980, with the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament. Running throughout all these associations is a major commitment to the development of sport for young people in the local community. Sport plays a major part in the development of life skills and values in society and HSBC is proud to support a wide range of programmes locally that bring opportunities and learning to young people around the world.
HSBC Champions
The HSBC Champions Men's and Women's golf tournaments feature the best international professional golfers.
Hosted in Shanghai and Singapore respectively, they give tournament winners around the world the opportunity to be crowned 'champion of champions'.
The men's event was last year (2009) elevated to become the first ever World Golf Championship tournament in Asia – and one of only four WGC tournaments worldwide - in recognition of its growing reputation and importance.
As well as staging world-class tournaments, HSBC has underpinned both events by playing an active role to develop junior golf.
Working in partnership with the China Golf Association to accelerate the growth and development of golf in China, the HSBC China Junior Golf Programme – now in its fourth year - will have introduced the physical and mental aspects of the game to Chinese boys and girls across the country.

The Open Championship
HSBC is a Patron of The Open Championship, which is without doubt, one of the world's most important golf tournaments. The partnership means that HSBC is the 'Official Banking Partner' of The Open Championship, which next year will return to Royal St George's (14-17 July, 2011), Sandwich, Kent.
In 2010, more than 200,000 spectators attended The Open Championship and over 3,000 hours of television coverage were broadcast to 193 countries worldwide. There were over three million unique visitors to The Open’s official website (www.opengolf.com) during this year’s Championship, with 300,000 hours of streamed coverage via the internet.
Based in St Andrews, The R&A is golf's governing body and organiser of The Open Championship. The R&A is committed to working for golf and operates with the consent of 141 organisations from the amateur and professional game and on behalf of over thirty million golfers in 126 countries. As the R&A seeks to engage in and support activities to grow the game, a partnership with ‘the world’s local bank’ is a natural progression. Playing a role in helping to develop and grow the game globally is typical of the way HSBC does business, particularly in emerging markets. Helping The R&A realise its full potential is consistent with the way HSBC works with all of its partners and customers. Please visit www.opengolf.com for more information.

British & Irish Lions
HSBC recently announced the renewal of its sponsorship of the British & Irish Lions. The partnership, which will run until the end of the next Lions Tour to Australia in 2013, follows the successful sponsorship of the 2009 tour to South Africa, signed in 2007. The agreement means that HSBC are the first Principal Partner to ever renew a sponsorship with The Lions and will see the Group become shirt sponsor of the team once again..

The 2009 Lions Tour allowed HSBC to connect with communities, staff and customers across the UK, Ireland and South Africa. Through our grassroots investments from youth coaching to coach education and a ticketing and mascot programme in South Africa we were able to make a significant difference to the communities we served – the legacy of which continues today.
